Nature Encounters J.F. Willumsen is known for his highly distinctive monumental style with intense colours, dazzling light and a range of subjects that often have humanity at the centre: The Great Relief with its various figural groups, the wealth of portraits and self-portraits, the dancing women and the travel accounts of folk life in southern Europe. But in a number of nature depictions, especially of mountains, Willumsen creates works empty of human beings where the encounter is with nature, and the artist’s own subjective interpretation is in focus. These works form the point of departure for the exhibition “NATURE ENCOUNTERS”. Through an extended dialogue with works by 11 Danish contemporary artists the exhibition unfolds and perspectivizes Willumsen’s fascination with and fear of rugged nature, and in particular his preoccupation with the power of the mountains as catalysts for mental journeys into the secret recesses of the mind. The contemporary artists selected here interpret nature from a variety of angles that include the systematically observing and registrative, the philosophical and the existentially exploratory as well as the constructed and culturally determined. It is not the flat Danish landscape that is the starting point for their works, but violent natural phenomena like glaciers, volcanic eruptions, tidal waves and the burning rays of the sun. The exhibition includes works from Danish artists Astrid Kruse Jensen, Dark Matters, Ditte Knus Tønnesen, Ebbe Stub Wittrup, Eske Kath, Eva Koch, Jacob Kirkegaard, John Kørner, Nikolaj Howalt, Olafur Eliasson and Tal R. The themes Cartography, Condensation, Confrontation, Construction and Contemplationframe the encounters between Willumsen’s mountain landscapes and the present-day interpretations of nature. The thematic juxtapositions open up new layers and narratives where the working process, form, content and perception engage in interactions across time and place. The themes are to be viewed as perspectives on art, but primarily as guidelines, and the boundaries between them are highly fluid. In the artworks exhibited there are no figures one can identify with and experience nature through. As viewers we are confronted with artistic interpretations of the natural phenomena and must ourselves take the journey into the stories in the works. To see the exhibition catalogue go HERE...
